Buying Guide – How to Choose the Best NVME SSD for PS5 Storage Expansion
Choosing the right NVME SSD involves considering several critical factors to ensure compatibility and performance with your console.
Interface and Speed
The PS5 supports PCIe Gen 4 SSDs with sequential read speeds of 5500MB/s or higher. Drives with 7000MB/s speeds provide the fastest load times available today. Ensure the drive meets these specifications to avoid performance bottlenecks during gameplay.
Look for NVMe SSDs that advertise high sequential read speeds to guarantee a smooth experience. Faster speeds mean quicker transitions between game menus and open worlds.
Capacity and Storage Needs
Game file sizes have grown significantly so a 1TB drive is often the minimum recommended size. 2TB drives are ideal for those who want to keep a large library installed without managing space constantly. Consider how many titles you play simultaneously.
Select a capacity that matches your gaming habits to avoid the hassle of transferring games. A larger drive ensures you have enough room for multiple large titles.
Heatsink Requirement
Sony requires that any M.2 expansion drive must have a heatsink to manage thermal output effectively. Drives without a built-in heatsink may lead to overheating issues in the console. Ensure the product you buy includes a heatsink to comply with requirements.
Choose a drive with an efficient heatsink design to maintain consistent performance. Proper cooling prevents throttling and extends the lifespan of your storage device.
Official Licensing
Officially licensed drives are guaranteed to work perfectly with the PS5 without compatibility issues. These drives have been tested by Sony to meet strict quality standards. Using a licensed drive removes the risk of errors or rejected drives during setup.
If you want peace of mind look for drives that explicitly state they are licensed for PS5. This ensures a seamless installation process and reliable long term performance.
Price and Warranty
Prices for NVME SSDs vary widely so consider your budget carefully. A good warranty like 5 years provides security against hardware failures. Balance the cost with the performance and reliability features offered by the manufacturer.
Invest in a drive that offers a strong warranty to protect your investment. Higher prices often reflect better quality and support but budget options are also available.
Brand Reputation
Choosing a reputable brand ensures better customer support and reliable product quality. Established companies like Samsung and WD have a proven track record of storage reliability. Newer brands may offer good value but check reviews for consistency.
Stick with well known manufacturers if you want proven reliability and support. Brand reputation can be a strong indicator of long term drive performance.
Physical Dimensions
The PS5 requires a standard 2280 size SSD which is the most common form factor. Ensure the drive dimensions fit within the console slot to avoid installation issues. Measure the heatsink thickness to confirm it fits inside the console.
Verify the physical specifications match the console requirements before purchasing. A standard 2280 drive will fit correctly in the expansion slot.
Endurance and Lifespan
Endurance refers to how much data can be written to the drive over its lifetime. High endurance drives are better for users who frequently install and uninstall large games. Check the TBW (Terabytes Written) rating for a measure of durability.
Consider the TBW rating to ensure the drive lasts for years of use. Higher endurance ratings indicate a drive that can handle heavy usage without degrading.
How to Use and Care for Your NVME SSD for PS5 Storage Expansion
To install your new SSD locate the expansion slot on your PS5 console by removing the side panel. Insert the drive into the M.2 slot and secure it with the provided screw. Attach the heatsink to the drive ensuring it is tightly fixed before closing the panel.
After installation turn on your console and navigate to the settings menu to format the new drive. Follow the on-screen instructions to initialize the storage so it is ready for use. This step ensures your drive is correctly recognized by the system.
Care for your drive by avoiding sudden power cuts during data transfers. Keep the console in a well ventilated area to prevent overheating. Regular system updates will ensure optimal compatibility and performance for your expansion drive.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use any NVME SSD for my PS5?
No your drive must meet specific requirements. It must be an M.2 NVMe SSD with PCIe Gen 4 support and sequential read speeds of at least 5500MB/s. It must also be 2280 size with a heatsink to ensure compatibility.
Do I need a heatsink for the PS5?
Yes Sony requires that all M.2 expansion drives have a heatsink. Without a heatsink the drive may overheat causing performance issues or system errors. Most drives listed in this guide include a heatsink to meet this requirement.
How do I install the SSD in my PS5?
